Supported documents
We verify the two documents people carry most: passports and national ID cards. The rule is simple: the document must have the printed code lines (the machine-readable zone) that most countries use.
Passports
- Any passport with two code lines under the photo page, from any country.
- The user scans the photo page only.
- Diplomatic and service passports in the same format are accepted.
National ID cards
- ID cards with three code lines on the back, the format used by most countries that issue cards today.
- The user scans the front, then the back.
- Residence ID cards that follow the same format are accepted as ID cards.
Not supported yet
- Driving licences.
- ID cards without code lines.
- Paper documents, photocopies and pictures of a document on a screen.
- Uploaded files. Every scan is taken live with the camera.
What we check on the document
| Check | What it means |
|---|---|
| Code lines | The code lines are read and every check digit must be correct. A changed digit or edited number fails. |
| Expiry | The document must not be expired on the day of the check. |
| Document type and country | Read from the code lines, so you can limit which countries you accept. |
| Live capture | The camera must see a real physical document in the frame, not a file. |
| Photo for face match | The photo on the document is compared with the user's live selfie. |
Tips for a quick scan
- Use good, even light and avoid glare on the card.
- Place the document on a dark, flat surface and fit it inside the frame.
- Remove plastic covers and holders.
- Hold still. The photo is taken automatically once the text is sharp.
